In this exercise we replicated a part of a painting and put the parts together to see how different they were.
Who was your referenced artist for the painting? Name 4 main ideas you used from your research to create your painting.
Name- Paul Gauguin 1. Tropical Landscapes like Tahiti 2. Short Brushstrokes that are popular in post impressionism 3. Undefined details and proportions 4. Contrasting colors Describe the craftsmanship of your painting. (Is it neat and well executed?) Some parts of the painting, such as the pond and the leaf areas are neat and came out well. Other areas, such as the bird or the background could have used more precision and attention to detail. What was the most difficult part of this project? The most difficult part of the project was using only color and not a lot of details because it makes it hard to tell what is in the painting. It was also difficult because most of the landscape was green, so it was hard to make separate areas distinguishable. Describe your color choices and how they reflect the work of your chosen artist? My color choices reflect the tropical nature of the artist’s work, through my use of green. I also tried to add contrast in certain areas which is a characteristic of my artist’s style. Describe how the style of your landscape reflects your chosen artist. The main ways my landscape reflects my artist is through the use of a tropical landscape. My artist frequently painted tahitian landscapes, which are usually tropical. I also used short brush strokes, which is in line with the post impressionism movement. What do you think your chosen artist would say if he or she could see your painting today? They would say that the brush strokes and subject are similar to their style. They would also say that the contrast works well, especially the red bird. What would you do differently if you were to do this project again? If I did this project again, I would choose a different landscape to paint. I chose one that was all green, which made it hard to have the different areas in the painting be separate. 1. Describe the craftsmanship of your sculpture. (Is it neat and well executed?) Some areas of the sculpture are well crafted, such as the brownie and vegetables. Some other areas of the sculpture such as the tray itself could be neater. 2. What was the most difficult part of this project? The most difficult part was shaping the tray so it was even and neat looking. It is hard to get the surfaces perfectly even and consistent throughout the piece. It was also hard to mix a realistic looking brown to put onto the chicken nuggets. 3. Did your color choices work together harmoniously? The colors work well together and they are realistic choices for the foods they are. The black helps to create contrast to make the colors pop. I like the yellow corn and green peas, which bring more interesting colors than just brown or black. 4. Is your sculpture interesting from all views? The best angle to view it from is from the top, because the inside of the tray is where most of the detail is. Despite this, it still is interesting from other perspectives. 5. Describe the differences in constructing a sculpture and doing something 2D. Sculptures have to be good from all angles, which makes them harder to construct than 2D work. There is also more pressure for sculptures to look realistic because they look closer to real life than 2D work. 6. How did you create textures in your sculpture? I created texture by adding holes in the brownie before it was fired so it looked like it was cooked. I also added texture when I painted the sculpture. I used a sponge to add a flaky texture to the chicken nuggets. 7. Does your sculpture look like the actual food? How did you accomplish this? It looks somewhat realistic because it is relatively the same size as a real tv dinner and it’s components are things that actually come in tv dinners. The most realistic part of the sculpture is the brownie because of the texture that was added before it was fired. 8. What would you do differently if you were to do this project again? If I did this project again I would take more time in the beginning of the project to make sure that everything was evenly crafted and smooth, especially the tray, which was a bit misshapen. I would also have painted the chicken nuggets a lighter, less red color. We used acrylic paint to practice value charts using tints and shades. We did color wheels to practice mixing colors.
We practiced using pastel chalk and pencils with different techniques. We also did spheres and fruit.
1. Describe the craftsmanship of your drawing. (Is it neat and well executed?)
It is mostly neat and well executed. There are some areas that could be improved but overall it is well crafted. 2. Do you think you used a full range of values to create the illusion of depth? I use a full range of values to add highlights and shadows to different areas of the snake’s body. I also use a range of values on each scale to make each one defined. 3. How do you think you represented the style of the artist Georgia O’ Keeffe? I represented Georgia O’Keeffe by focusing on the close up textures and colors of an object in nature rather than the whole image. I also represented her style by making a non abstract object abstract. 4. Describe your choice of colors/color harmonies and how you used them throughout the artwork. I chose to use all green and cool colors throughout the piece. I used green as the main color and added accents of different cool toned colors to add different types of colors. 5. How did you create contrast in your drawing? I created contrast by defining each different section of the piece with dark colors to separate them. I also added other colors so the whole piece was not just green. 6. How did you use textures, highlights and shadows to enhance your artwork? I used the scaly and smooth texture on each individual scale to make each scale different. I use highlights and shadows to show where each scale ends and where they overlap. 7. Describe any difficulties you had creating your drawing and what you could do to improve your drawing? It is hard to get all of the individual scales because they are all slightly different. It is also hard to portray the depth of the whole body of the snake. If I could do the piece over again I would have done a smaller piece because the individual scales take a long time to finish 1. Discuss your decision on pen and ink techniques. Why you chose to use one or more.
I used multiple techniques throughout the piece. I chose to use stippling on the road to help with the appearance of distance. I used cross contouring on the roof of the building to give it shape and color. I also used invented technique to give unique textures to objects. I didn’t want to just use one technique because I wanted the piece to have variation. 2. How did you use perspective? Why is perspective important? The perspective is in the road as it gets farther away. Perspective is important because it gives an image depth and prevents it from appearing flat. 3. How is texture important in your composition? Texture is important because it gives definition to objects and differentiates them. It also helps add diversity and interest to a composition. 4. Why is value so important in this project? The values are so important because there are no other colors to add, there is only black. If there is not value, the piece will end up looking flat and ill defined. 5. Describe your craftsmanship (How well the project is crafted technically) The piece is crafted well, but I believe it could be improved. Some of the lines and shading could have been more consistent. The level of detail could be expanded on as well. 6. If you could recreate your piece what would you do differently to enhance your final outcome? If I could do the piece over again, I would add more value in some of the empty space that is white. I would also be a little more careful to make sure I didn’t make any mistakes in the lines or shading. 7. When applying the pen and ink techniques why and how is it important to make sure you understand the concepts taught in class? It is important to understand the concepts so that the medium can be used to its full potential. It is essential to understand how to add values and textures to enhance a piece. It is also important to fully understand how to use pen and ink because it is permanent and cannot be redone. 8. As a growing artist how do you think what you have learned will guide and better your future projects. I learned how to use pen and ink techniques and how to add value and depth using them. I also learned how to plan a piece out fully so that when I do the final piece, I already know exactly what I am doing. |
